2017 Summer Art Camp

 

Summer Art Camp begins Monday June 12 and runs through July 28. This year’s camp will take place at West Side School, Felta School House, and Healdsburg Community Center. Seven weeks – offering a variety of art related subjects for a variety of ages.

HCA offers a limited number of scholarships. Application can be made by sending an email to info@healdsburgcenterforthearts.org, with your child’s name, age, title of the session and a statement of need.

WEEK ONE – JUNE 12 – 16

10+Mixed Media: Art on Fabrics and Paper
Silk and cotton fabrics will be painted with dyes and acrylic paints.  Framed silk art and soft animal sculptures will be created by all.  Additionally, we will explore using dyes and acrylics on paper and stiff boards.  Also, while working on drawing skills, other art media will be used, like pencil, pens and colored pencils.

A Rainbow of Mixed Media
Every day of camp we will create a new piece of art using many different media: dyes on silk and cotton fabrics, acrylics on canvas board, sumi-e brush work, watercolors, oil pastels and colored pencils on paper, also metal tooling.

Printmaking
This hands-on class will introduce basic techniques and tools, encouraging students to develop individual projects in mediums including monotype, woodcut, silkscreen and etching.  We will carve, incise, transfer images and learn the secrets of ink on paper.  Students will be encouraged to develop individual projects layering plates and creating textural images built from a variety of materials.

WEEK TWO – JUNE 19 – 23

Summer Waves Sewing Camp
Students will use several sewing machines to sew an adorable whale pillow/animal, a shark or fish drawstring backpack great for carrying around to all your summer fun activities.  We’ll make a little snap wallet that is the perfect size for a little cash & your library card, as well as a cool summer hat!

Cook, Bake and Garden
This class includes organic cooking, baking, gardening and nutrition. Gardening and cooking together cultivates relationships and fosters listening and direction following skills. Students will be planting seeds, trimming herbs, kneading dough, measuring ingredients and doubling recipes. They will learn how to make various snacks, smoothies, design and cook full meals. Each student will take home a customized mini-garden.

WEEK THREE – JUNE 26 – 30

Meet the Masters: Abstract Expressionists
This fun, educational class will introduce famous Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Clifford Still and Lee Krasner. Students will work in a variety of media – acrylic, pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, printmaking, conte crayon, watercolor, etc – while emulating the styles and subject matter of each artist. Students will also keep a journal to record short biographies and the visual ideas of each master.
AGES: 8-12

Painting and Mixed Media
For kids who love art and want to have fun exploring a variety of painting techniques with different media. Through imagination and observation, the class will explore composition through the elements of art such as line and color, and principles of design such as contrast and pattern. Media may include watercolor, tempera, collage, charcoal, oil pastel, image transfers and prints.

WEEK FOUR – JULY 5 – 7

Sweet Summer Hand Sewing
This camp is a great alternative for those interested in sewing, but not ready for a sewing machine.  We will focus on embroidery, sewing buttons and hand sewing to create things that can be used at home such as fruity coasters, sweet button fruit napkins, coin purse & a little felt book that can hold your hand sewing needles!
AGES: 6 – 9

Garden Art MosaicsIMG_4327
Tile snippers, hammers, and colorful tiles will be our tools in this garden art workshop (eye protection and gloves too). Starting from scratch, each student will design and create a colorful, usable stepping stone. The process will include assessing the materials and sketching ideas, breaking an assortment of colored tile into usable pieces and gluing the “tesserae” down, and finally, grouting to finish the piece. We will also produce a site-specific mosaic for the Healdsburg Community Garden.

WEEK FIVE – JULY 10 – 14

Introduction to Design through Mosaic
Students will learn the principles of design and color using the techniques of the ancient art of mosaic. Working with colored construction paper, cut into small squares, rectangles, and triangles, the students will be creating patterns, both geometric and pictorial. We will build upon this technique by adding a 3-dimensional element and discover the relationships between colors, shapes and design.

WEEK SIX – JULY 17 – 21

Design a Game! Cardboard Arcade
Based on the YouTube sensation, Caine’s Arcade, this class will utilize cardboard, tape, minor tools, and scraps of other industrial by-products that have great recycling potential. Students work individually or in groups to create arcade games and machines that mimic the fun engineering aspects of a real arcade. Students will then build a “real” arcade, complete with group prize wall and real attendants.  As our finale, parents, siblings and friends come try their luck at our arcade. This class integrates planning, design engineering, teamwork, and practical construction skills.

WEEK SEVEN – JULY 24 – 28

Fusion Art Camp
Students will develop creativity, critical thinking and friendships. Each day, different disciplines will be fused with art.  Classes will include art and math in which we invent toys and create geometric paper sculptures; art and science with experiments in goo, flubber, neon slime and other adventures in our chemistry art “lab”; art and history in which we will make “historically-dressed” puppets and masks, create a script and, then, present a play; art and stories in which we write and illustrate original books and graphic novels; and, finally, art and movement outside as we create and play our own giant, outdoor games and murals.

Book Making
Using paint, collage and various stamping and printmaking techniques, students will transform old books into something entirely new to take home. We will learn simple bookmaking techniques including origami books, pop-up books, and basic sewing techniques for binding.  Participants will be encouraged to develop a theme or narrative using both words and pictures if they choose.
