Plein Air on the Plaza

Plein Air on the Plaza
For Everyone. A One-Day Workshop

Many of us would like to capture, through sketching, the places we travel.

We will explore what it takes to create a good Plein Air sketch from what’s in front of you.

Phil will guide you through how to select your subjects, focus on important areas and quickly put down a drawing that you can paint with watercolor on the spot or go back to later when you have more time. He will show you how to pack the  essentials of a Plein Air sketch bag.

Students will meet at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts classroom, 334 Center Street, Healdsburg. The first hour will be spent in the classroom, then a walk to the Plaza (two blocks) to enjoy some “Plein Air” time. There is a break for lunch at 12:30 for a half hour (sack lunch recommended). Some drawing practice recommended.

My 30+ years in the Graphic Communications and Advertising business included jobs as a Free-lance Illustrator and graphic designer with my own offices in San Francisco, CA, Art Director/Creative Director at Charles Schwab & Co., Contract graphic designer and package designer for a wide variety of products and services. Clients included multi-national, and local businesses and charitable organizations.

After retiring from the graphics business, I studied painting in oil and watercolor, etching and ceramics. I’ve shown my work at the Folsom Art Center Gallery and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. I’m currently a gallery artist at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, in Healdsburg, CA.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate to receive various awards and recognition for my work including Awards from the Los Angeles Society of IllustratorsGraphic Design Magazine, and PRINT Magazine. In 2020, one of my paintings was selected to be included into the “Open Exhibit” at the De Young Museum.

Today, my wife Barbara and live in Healdsburg, California where we both enjoy photography, sketching, painting and travel.
