Writing for Artists: Drawing for Writers
Writing & Drawing Workshop with J. Ruth Gendler, Berkeley Writer & Artist
Workshop Series does not need to be attended consecutively. Please plan to join us in this second workshop and receive the benefit of Ruth Gendler’s facilitating and the pleasure of creating among other artists and writers.
Writer and Artist J. Ruth Gendler: “Bones for me is always deep structure. Bridges are everywhere, breath is a bridge, and language, and the eye that sees outward and inward.”
Rooted in the qualities of curiosity, clarity, courage, creativity and courtesy, Gendler’s workshop will introduce some new ways to look, listen, and make. Open to everyone: the experienced artist/writer; the person who hasn’t drawn since third grade; the person actively pursuing a current creative project.
Collage, drawing, writing—lists, questions, dialogs, dreams, metaphors—are all part of our tool kit.
It’s always lively when creative people take a break from their main form (s) and experiment. Artists writing poems. Writers sculpting. Dancers painting. Weavers singing. Over the years I have found visual artists often have a very vivid, direct way with words. The writing feels rooted and real. Many writers need a break from thinking in words and love letting the letters and words become lines, shapes and pictures. Using writing and art together helps us to see what we are saying and say what we see—whether we are inventing conversations between beloved and less favored colors, allowing the shapes in our paintings to speak out loud or making up a dream for an artistic ancestor. Playing with the same ideas in different media allows us to experience the nature of each media more immediately.

About J Ruth Gendler
J. Ruth Gendler has been involved with the intersection between writing and art and interdisciplinary collaboration for much of her life. Her monotypes, drawings and paintings have recently been exhibited at the Atlantic Gallery Member Invitational (New York), Google (San Francisco) Oakopolis in the Art Murmur, the Commonwealth Club, and the Dream Institute. In winter 2016 the online magazine Seven Pillars published “In Celebration of Trees,” a gallery of 18 of Gendler’s tree drawings and prints with her poem, “Thinking with Trees.”
Gendler is the author of three books which include her art work: the bestselling The Book of Qualities, the award-winning Notes on the Need for Beauty, and the anthology Changing Light. In Spring, 2017 Cornish College students made Qualities into a site specific performance at Volunteer Park in Seattle, and Visionary Dance Theatre in San Diego premiered a two-act children’s ballet based on Qualities. A long time poet-in-the schools, Gendler has taught writing and art to adults and children for thirty years.
