Exploring Sgraffito Design
Sgraffito is a pottery technique produced by applying thin layers of a contrasting slip or underglaze color to an unfired ceramic piece, then scratching away select areas using carving tools to reveal the underlying layer. In this workshop, we will explore Sgraffito techniques by preparing the raw clay tile pieces with a contrasting slip coat, then applying stencil art to the tiles before carving our designs. Pre-cut tiles will be supplied by the instructor and students will be shown how to apply the contrasting slip color prior to carving the design-work. All green-ware tile pieces created in class can be bisque fired and glazed at High School ceramics studio. A glazing demonstration as well as “how to” instructions will also be provided during the workshop. Come explore your creative side with this fun and intriguing pottery technique!
